College Relationships
College friends are like high school friends. Both will let us borrow their pens if he or she doesn’t have one. They will let us copy their assignments if we were too lazy to do ours. They will invite fellow friends to the mall after class. They will always serve as a bad influence and a good one at the same time. College friends, like high school friends, will always be there for us as our second family.

How Does A Typical College Professor Teaches?
Extra-curricular Activities (An Analogy)

An extra-curricular activity is like another book that a college students might choose to carry despite of his already heavy books. However, unlike his academic books, this new book may save him from boredom and stress. He can meet new people, be friends with others, express his self, and show his talents through this book.
It started with a letter
Letters form words, and words form phrases/clauses/sentences. Sentences form paragraphs, and paragraphs result to any kind of writing. First, it’s just a misused letter that could result to a misspelled word, later, your whole writing is already stained, then your grade would rely on what you did. Now, you’re bothered if you’ll fail or not. Imagine, it was just a letter.
College Relationship
College relationship is defined as the kind of interaction a person has in his or her college life. It is often developed by certain school activities, group works, researches wherein a person gets to mingle with his or her colleagues. It builds a set of beliefs and perspectives that one can use in his or her life. This kind of relationship exhibits the start of having s deep and serious interaction between the people involved. Indeed, it is not merely knowledge that we gain from college: college relationship proves it.

sweet acronyms
Acronyms are word formed by combining the beginning letters of a name or phrase. some examples are IMY (I Miss You) and ILY (I Love You). Nowadays, most people use a lot of acronyms especially on text messages and chats. This shows informal usage of english language or just to shorten words so it can be easily written and memorize. It can be helpful, especially on initializing names of agencies, memorizing concepts in school and more, but it also can create confusion at times.

When Change is not
There are other countless ironic life quotes. Surprisingly, most of these quotes prove to be the more valuable compared to others. They do not only challenge a person of being able to grasp profound grammar, but they also give people important reflection. The quote above is confusing at first, but it soon makes us realize a painful reality. When we learn to face and accept change, we then learn to consider that change is not "change" at all. We accept "change" and see it as part of a monotonous process -- a cycle.

Effective Paragraphs
In this course, we are required to write an effective paragraph. For a paragraph to be effective, we must know the characteristics of a well-organized paragraph. Our professor in English taught us things we should remember in writing an effective paragraph. Unity, coherence, order and emphasis are needed to formulate a well-organized paragraph. I hope we can write a good paragraph in this course.

COMPUTER SHOP
I saw this sign in a computer shop while I was waiting for my friend. It really caught my attention because it was posted at the front door of the shop. The worse part is, until now the sign is still there. It seems that no one else notice the wrong.

I'm good. :)
At that instant, I remembered what I had just learned in my English class. It is wrong to say "I'm good"; we must say "I'm doing fine" or "I'm well" when asked about our condition. For the former is only applicable to inanimate objects and the latter to humans. to say "I'm good" means to be good at something, not to state your well-being.
Of course, I stayed mum at that instant so as not to offend my friend. :)

Pointers in Writing an Essay
You should write clear sentences and focus on the main idea of your essay.

Please avoid! :)
Try writing stories and reading some, they help.
During our last test in English 1, I encountered a sentence with a speaker and the sentence he or she said. I realized I had no shot in punctuating it, but I remembered how Stephenie Mayer wrote the same type of sentences in her books. I checked them countless times so I don't make errors in my stories. I got it right but still failed the exam.

New word in my vocabulary
A friend in Facebook posted the word malaise in her wall post. She mentioned that it is often sensed as “just not right”. I looked up its meaning, and I found out that malaise is an indefinite feeling of debility or lack of health often accompanying the onset of an illness. A medical term is now added to my vocabulary.

Regarding grammar
It is not right to say "with regards to". Most people say and write of this phrase. One must say this instead: "with regard to".The phrase 'as regards' is also acceptable.
Also, one must not say "in regard to". Instead, one should say 'in regards to'.But "in regards to"is nonstandard. You can also convey the same idea with "in respect to" or "with respect to," or—simplest of all—just plain “regarding.”

May this help us in our next lesson.
Folk
As I read “Chapter IV: Misused Words and Expressions” of The Elements of Style, I encountered the word folk, which I always hear on the radio. According to the book, folk is a collective noun that is equivalent to people. Folks, in the sense of “parents”, “family”,”those present”, is colloquial and too folksy for formal writing.
TRIVIA
"Dreamt" is the only English word that ends with "mt". Reading trivial posts about English can give you more knowledge about English. You can discover many things that you don’t know. Try browsing the internet and look for some trivias. I assure you that it’s fun.
Pronunciation of Words
SOUND TRIP
"You still HASN'T called."
That sentence is grammatically wrong. Instead of HASN'T, HAVEN'T should be used.Writers should check the grammar of their song, and not only focus on how to make it sound good.
Friendly fire is not friendly.
Early Modern English
SONG-A-LONGS
In listening to a song, one must observe the English usage of the piece to know if it’s grammatical. For example, I never felt nothing in the world like this before--a line from the song "Wait for you" by Elliot Yamin--uses double negative. See? Listen carefully to other songs and think if you'll still listen to errorific songs.

Did you know that salvage means “rescue”? Yes, it is. According to Wikipedia, salvage means rescue ,but it is referred as the slang word for summary execution in Philippine English. Salvage is also related to the Spanish-derived Tagalog slang “sinalbahe” that literally means “turned bad”. Isn’t it amazing? Redundancies
Moral lesson, repeat once again, free gifts, foreign imports, advance warning, ATM machine, etc. These words contain redundancy errors. Redundancies are errors that express repetitious meanings. These redundant expressions make writing longer, not better. Moreover, the phrases just weigh down our writing with unnecessary words. Other examples are brief summary, absolutely essential and actual facts.
REDUNDANCY: A Major Major Mistake!
If or Whether?
• Let me know if you'll be coming means that I want to hear from you only if you're coming.
• Let me know whether you'll be coming means that I want to hear from you about your plans one way or the other.
(Garner, The Oxford Dictionary of American Usage and Style)
Proximity and English
A closer look at "Major Major"
According to some of our country's linguists, Ms. Venus Raj translated her answer from Tagalog to English (e.g bonggang-bongga, araw-araw).She assumed that the translation would be fine, considering most translations. Her answer in Tagalog, I assumed was this : "Walang major na major na problema". Therefore, her answer in English turned out to be this: "There is nothing major major, I mean problem..". The phrase 'I mean' signified Venus' realization that her answer proved to be grammatically wrong. :)
But that' okay. She just let the world know that her line "major major" sprung from her being Filipino.

"I" vs "me"
The use of “I” and “me” is one of the common errors in pronoun usage. “I” is use as the subject of the sentence while “me” is use as the object of the sentence. When these pronouns are used with a noun, the noun should go first followed by the correct form of the pronoun, as if it stands alone.

Alphabets, Poems and English
"Old friends are like alphabets, and new friends are poems ; one will need to entirely learn the alphabets to make wonderful poems.."
Touching, is it not? This quote also signifies the importance of how we must view English. We must know the basics -- the nouns, pronouns etc.-- in order to make exemplary works of literature. In a sense, therefore, we must fully understand English and its other branches to our full potential.

"Can I?" or "May I?"
Because of my confusion, I looked up the proper usage of”may” and "can". Both have different meanings. "Can" refers to ability when used as a verb while "may” has to do with permission and possibility. Now, when someone asks if he can talk to you and you don’t want to you can say he can but he may not.

While I was reading Al Neuharth’s book, Confession of an S.O.B., an unfamiliar word caught my attention. It was troika. The Wonders of Etymology on Right and Left
Etymology(the study of words),along with English, makes language fascinating.
Take the words "left " and "right”. People can conclude that one is derogatory than the other. The word 'left' in many languages is associated with evil or the devil. However, the Greek "dexter" gives us the word "dextrous" (skilful) means "on the right". ‘Left' (from Old English lyft) means 'weak, worthless’. Among the Nyoro in Africa, for example, 'left' means 'hated', and in Japan it means 'crazy'.
Common words which we people speak nowadays also regard left a defamatory concept than its counterpart. Did you ever hear the words lefteous, or even upleft in conversations, perhaps?
