College Relationships

College friends are like high school friends. Both will let us borrow their pens if he or she doesn’t have one. They will let us copy their assignments if we were too lazy to do ours. They will invite fellow friends to the mall after class. They will always serve as a bad influence and a good one at the same time. College friends, like high school friends, will always be there for us as our second family.

EXCELLENCE STARTS ON ACADEMIC WORK

All things sprang from small beginnings. A little effort exerted makes the picture a complete one. In academics, one has to go through ladder of experiences before one reaches the top. When one enters the room and pick up a chair, the journey begins. Listening in the discussion builds the first step. Application of the lessons learned through assignments works for the second step. It follows that one can perform on examinations. These are some of the few works handed over, that as one looks back, he or she has seen the development brought about by academic work.

How Does A Typical College Professor Teaches?

It is one thing to be cool but it is another to be revolutionary. College professors clearly show that they are the latter. They use different ways when they teach so that students can learn in the way that is easiest for them. The moment a typical college professor enters the room, he immediately discusses the lessons intended for that day. He might use a chalkboard or a projector. Then, students participate through answering the questions asked by the professor. After some sorts of discussions and explanations, the professor gives exercises to know if the students really understand the lessons. Then, he might also assign homeworks. Finally, he checks the attendance and eventually dismisses the class.

Extra-curricular Activities (An Analogy)

An extra-curricular activity is like another book that a college students might choose to carry despite of his already heavy books. However, unlike his academic books, this new book may save him from boredom and stress. He can meet new people, be friends with others, express his self, and show his talents through this book.

It started with a letter

Letters form words, and words form phrases/clauses/sentences. Sentences form paragraphs, and paragraphs result to any kind of writing. First, it’s just a misused letter that could result to a misspelled word, later, your whole writing is already stained, then your grade would rely on what you did. Now, you’re bothered if you’ll fail or not. Imagine, it was just a letter.

College Relationship

College relationship is defined as the kind of interaction a person has in his or her college life. It is often developed by certain school activities, group works, researches wherein a person gets to mingle with his or her colleagues. It builds a set of beliefs and perspectives that one can use in his or her life. This kind of relationship exhibits the start of having s deep and serious interaction between the people involved. Indeed, it is not merely knowledge that we gain from college: college relationship proves it.

Extra Curricular Activities in UPDEPP and in other Universities

Talent Competitions, fashion shows, pageants and mind-wracking contests are just some of the extra curricular activities in UPDEPP. These events happen throughout the academic year. Students are free to join in these events to represent their organization or their blocks. Unlike in other universities, extra curricular activities only happen during their yearly foundation week, and students represent their courses. In UPDEPP, extra curricular activities are organized by the organizations, fraternities and sororities which are only composed of students while in other universities, extra curricular activities are managed by the school administrators. The organizers and the time of executing these events differentiate the extra curricular activities in UPDEPP from other universities.

shortest bible verses

Job 3:2-"He said"
John 11:35-"Jesus wept"
1 Thessalonians 5:16-"Be joyful always"
1 Thessalonians 5:17-"Pray continually"

These are some of the verses that I learned in Sunday School as the ones to always have in your pocket. The most famous among these is Jesus wept (john 11:35). This occurred when Jesus went to Lazarus' tomb after Lazarus had died. so whenever you're asked to recite a verse, just choose among the list above. it's never too hard to memorize a bible verse this short.

sweet acronyms

My friend once texted me "ITALY bea" I dont know what my friend means with that so i asked her what does that mean. "I Trust And Love You bea" she replied.
Acronyms are word formed by combining the beginning letters of a name or phrase. some examples are IMY (I Miss You) and ILY (I Love You). Nowadays, most people use a lot of acronyms especially on text messages and chats. This shows informal usage of english language or just to shorten words so it can be easily written and memorize. It can be helpful, especially on initializing names of agencies, memorizing concepts in school and more, but it also can create confusion at times.

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is an English word, with 34 letters, that was in the song with the same title in the Disney musical film Mary Poppins. The roots of the word have been defined as follows: super- "above", cali- "beauty", fragilistic- "delicate", expiali- "to atone", and docious- "educable", with the sum of these parts signifying roughly "Atoning for educability through delicate beauty." It is defined as "something to say when you have nothing to say".This word is considered as one of the most famous longest words in English language.

When Change is not

"The more things change, the more they stay the same.."

There are other countless ironic life quotes. Surprisingly, most of these quotes prove to be the more valuable compared to others. They do not only challenge a person of being able to grasp profound grammar, but they also give people important reflection. The quote above is confusing at first, but it soon makes us realize a painful reality. When we learn to face and accept change, we then learn to consider that change is not "change" at all. We accept "change" and see it as part of a monotonous process -- a cycle.

ANALYZING CAUSE AND EFFECT: COLLEGE PROFESSORS

University of the Philippines professors tend to train their students to be more competitive. Though many students complain about the difficulty of their subjects, the professors keep a consistent attitude of being strict towards their teaching. Instructors show this kind of picture is because they trust their students to be capable enough to surpass the academic challenges. Due to this kind of training, no UP student will graduate ignorant and incompetent.

Classifying Academic Works

A library contains an adequate selection of academic works. These academic works go under certain sections in the library. The periodical section showcases a vast collection of newspapers, magazines, journals, and certain print materials updated to fill the readers in with the most recent affairs. The library comprises informative print materials such as but not limited to textbooks, research papers, dictionaries, thesaurus, and encyclopedias. The audio visuals section provides films and documentaries which are very essential to learning since they give the learner a more vivid understanding on information seen in books.

Say something men!

The seminar I attended yesterday was worth may time. I really don't attend any seminars during high school because they've never met my expectation and I always find them boring; but yesterday's was good,I learned a lot from it. One of the quotes that captured my attention was this, "Youngsters with poor communication skills are sometimes viewed as less attractive by their peers and enjoy fewer friendships."

Essay Exams

Students believe that in writing essay exams, all they have to do is make their answers as lengthy as they needed. But, essay exams should allow one to demonstrate one’s mastery of the topic and one’s critical thinking with the use of the ability to synthesize. One has to prepare well and answer the questions concisely, coherently and completely.

it is cool when you talk cool

Earlier in Marquee Mall, my block mates and I attended a Youth Assembly. This assembly aims to wake up us, youth, in what are now happening in our country and what we may contribute. One of the guess speaker is ma'am Alfelor. Her topic was about Developing Speech Communication Skills towards a Promising Career. This talk really inspired me to develop my communication skills, because I realized that it is cool when you talk cool.

Portmanteau Words are Amazing

Have you ever wondered where the word "blog" came from? Just recently, I have discovered that the word "blog" is actually  a combination of the words web and log. Interesting huh? Portmanteau or blend words are derived by combining portions of two or more separate words. Other examples of these words are:  "motor + hotel = motel," "motorcar + cavalcade = motorcade" but what amazed me most is the word "goodbye" which was derived from the sentence "God + be (with) + ye."

A Good Writer

A good writer should always consider the content and structure of his paragraph. If there are good ideas but they are not expressed well because of poor sentence structure, the readers will not understand the paragraph. However, if all sentences are grammatically correct yet it lacks the ideas and information that your target readers need to know, they will also lose their interest in reading the paragraph.

Hitting Two Birds With One Stone

Late this afternoon, one of my UP friends sent me a message. She was asking  me to go to her group mate's house and help them regarding the grammatical errors they committed in their case study paper. I was really hesitant to go because it was hot, but sooner took the opportunity for it could help me improve my grammar and at the same time a review for English 1.

Effective Paragraphs

In this course, we are required to write an effective paragraph. For a paragraph to be effective, we must know the characteristics of a well-organized paragraph. Our professor in English taught us things we should remember in writing an effective paragraph. Unity, coherence, order and emphasis are needed to formulate a well-organized paragraph. I hope we can write a good paragraph in this course.

"testify"

According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, to testify is to make a solemn declaration under oath for establishing a fact. I looked for some humorous facts in English through the website www.antimoon.com. According to the mentioned website, the word "testify” came from men in the Roman court swearing to a statement made by swearing on their testicles.

Heterograph

I was thinking of a nice topic to post in the blog until the term heterograph came across my mind. Heterographs are words that have the same pronunciation, but have different spellings and meanings. People always misuse these words. In effect, the thought and meaning of a sentence is being misunderstood.
Example: to/too/two

Drinking has never been this cool

Did you know that Edgar Allan Poe drinks alcohol before he writes his work. Some people say that it weird for one to drink alcohol before writing a poem but for me it is cool. Not so many people can do that thing and that makes Edgar Allan Poe a special one. :)

word XXX

I always learn a lot of new words every time I read novels. I really don't look up every word that is new to me-- even without a dictionary, you will understand some of them. I try to guess the meaning of the words, but when I am not really sure, that's the time I'll look for its meaning in the dictionary.

JEWELRIES??

When I'm in high school, I saw the word jewelries in one of the articles in our English book. I remembered what our English professor had discussed in the class. Jewelry does not have plural form. Instead, it is always used in singular form only. I doubt because there are still many writings that use the incorrect plural form of jewelry.

Single Quotation Marks

Today, I was reminded by Renz, my brother, on how to use single quotation marks. Single quotation marks are used to set off a quotation within a quotation.

Examples:

"When I had difficulty coping with my studies, Jane said,'Hang in there, friend.'"

The irate mother said, "You must get all of this 'junk' out of the living room at once."

A blog to see

I was looking for commonly misused words in the internet when I saw this blog site, http://dontenglishme.blogspot.com. Obviously, the name of the blog is intentionally wrong so it can easily catch its readers’ attention. The blog shares some grammar lessons and writing tips. Through browsing the site, I was able to learn and realize many things regarding English grammar.

Figure of Speech.

Making a paragraph colorful and interesting is difficult. A simple solution to this problem is the use of figures of speech. Figures of speech are words or phrases that don't actually mean what they say. Be sure that the readers can comprehend what you are trying to say. Otherwise, it'll be pointless.

-Letter in a Lighter (Gerard Clata)

negritude

While I was scanning a book, a word caught my attention. That word is negritude. Because of curiosity, I looked its meaning in the dictionary. Negritude means a movement among African writers to express the African's pride for their color and beauty of their race.

COMPUTER SHOP

"We PRINTS..."
I saw this sign in a computer shop while I was waiting for my friend. It really caught my attention because it was posted at the front door of the shop. The worse part is, until now  the sign is still there. It seems that no one else notice the wrong.

topic

In our English 1 subject, we already started thinking for the best topic on our final paper. Lots of ideas entered my mind, but only three topics should I considered. On those three, I should choose the best topic for me, which I am expert to and interested to. This final paper depends if I may continue to Communication 1, so I should put all my efforts in this to be a great piece.

I'm good. :)

Just recently, I overheard a friend of mine talking over the phone. The conversation was the sort that we hear each day. "How are you today, ------ ?",said the voice over the phone."I'm good", said my friend.

At that instant, I remembered what I had just learned in my English class. It is wrong to say "I'm good"; we must say "I'm doing fine" or "I'm well" when asked about our condition. For the former is only applicable to inanimate objects and the latter to humans. to say "I'm good" means to be good at something, not to state your well-being.

Of course, I stayed mum at that instant so as not to offend my friend. :)

Convince

Imagine that people nod their heads in approval to all the things they experience, will it be a drab? An argument is presenting reasons against something but having the purpose to convince. Therefore, to disagree is not to quarrel but to make clear of the other side of the issue by citing and proving evidences.

Write your heart out

We students have hard times doing our writings, because almost all are afraid to appear faulty. We shouldn’t be very anxious of being perfect and end up sacrificing what we wanted to say. Things we want to say can be smoothly delivered if we’ll write freely. It’s easier to write our hearts out then, later, we may correct what we did.

Pointers in Writing an Essay

Essay is a piece of writing which is often written from the author's point of view. For the introduction, you should write the thesis statement and give a background information. You should develop each supporting paragraph and make sure to follow the correct format.
You should write clear sentences and focus on the main idea of your essay.

SNAFU or ERROR?

A while ago, we studied about the differences of many words that make people very confused. Examples of which are the words snafu and error. As we all know, error is defined as mistake while snafu is related to a mistake regarding one's social life. Snafu is not merely used for an academic or formal writing.
I learned a new word from today's English 1 class. The word is "booboo". It means embarassing. Just by listening and being attentive in class can help you get some extra knowledge. These words can widen your vocabulary and maybe it can help you in future time. :)

Maybe I'll use May Be

Maybe and may be functions differently. Maybe is an adverb while the two-word may be is an auxiliary verb + linking verb.

Example:

Maybe we can visit the king.

We may be able to visit the King.

Please avoid! :)

Academic essays are formal mode of expression. You must use English which is more formal than the language that you often use in everyday conversation, e-mails or in SMS. You should never use contractions or slang phrases in an academic essay. Please note that it is inappropriate to use numerals in these essays.

Try writing stories and reading some, they help.

During our last test in English 1, I encountered a sentence with a speaker and the sentence he or she said. I realized I had no shot in punctuating it, but I remembered how Stephenie Mayer wrote the same type of sentences in her books. I checked them countless times so I don't make errors in my stories. I got it right but still failed the exam.

-Letter in a Lighter (Gerard Clata)

FULL- FLEDGED

For the past days, I've been thinking on what to blog. There are lots of ideas running on my head, but apparently almost everything was already written and posted before. Fortunately we had our make up class in English I and I would say that I've learned a lot today. I will share something for some who wasn't able to attend the class. The term full-fledged, which means having attained complete status, is often mistaken as full- pledged. I admit that I myself thought that it was full- pledged instead of full- fledged. Good thing we have English I, I'm really learning a lot. :)

New word in my vocabulary

A friend in Facebook posted the word malaise in her wall post. She mentioned that it is often sensed as “just not right”. I looked up its meaning, and I found out that malaise is an indefinite feeling of debility or lack of health often accompanying the onset of an illness. A medical term is now added to my vocabulary.

English language

Language is used as means of communication. It is the dialect that people apply in order to understand each other. We use different languages depending upon our location. Usually, people use the English language because it is known as the international language. It became the third most natively spoken language and a lot of countries, including the Philippines, consider it as their second language.

aha

The word continual is different with continuous. Continual means an event happens again and again. It happens, then stops. Continuous means an event happens without stopping.

It is helpful to remember this analogy
continual : broken line (_ _ __ _ __ _ _ ____ )
continuous : straight line ( _______________ )

Regarding grammar

"Regard" is a common word used in both non-academic or academic works. However, the word's several phrasal forms cause grammatical errors, even to the most grammar-conscious beings.

It is not right to say "with regards to". Most people say and write of this phrase. One must say this instead: "with regard to".The phrase 'as regards' is also acceptable.

Also, one must not say "in regard to". Instead, one should say 'in regards to'.But "in regards to"is nonstandard. You can also convey the same idea with "in respect to" or "with respect to," or—simplest of all—just plain “regarding.”

Dora Knows Better

My younger sister loves watching "Dora the Explorer." Sometimes, I watch the cartoon series with her and I can't help but notice how Dora uses the correct prepositions in describing the way she would go. Then I remembered my high school English teacher telling us, "If you want a child to learn good English, make him or her watch Dora."

Magnificat

Yesterday, I saw the word magnificat. This word made me really disturbed. At first, I thought that magnificat is mispelled, and it should be magnificant. I looked up for its meaning and realized that it is not mispelled. As a matter of fact, Magnificat is a Latin word that means my soul magnifies.

Anne Curtis' Lipstick

While my board mates and I were viewing the Kapamilya Stars' pictures on Star Magic Ball,we'd read a comment on Anne's photos that has an error. It says, "I am not against her but di ko gusto the way she put lipstick on,, it is so look sticky and ooohhh i dont know how to expresss."

It should be, "I am not against her but di ko gusto the way she PUTS HER lipstick on.It LOOKS SO sticky and ooohhh i dont know how to EXPRESS."

draft

While I was reading the book Reading Into Writing 1 by Conception Dadufalza, a paragraph caught my attention. It goes like this. Drafting and revising are closely related. The draft surges from thought into words; the revision draws back into thought. When writers draft, they write more than they pause. When thay revise, they pause more than they write.

May this help us in our next lesson.

Folk

As I read “Chapter IV: Misused Words and Expressions” of The Elements of Style, I encountered the word folk, which I always hear on the radio. According to the book, folk is a collective noun that is equivalent to people. Folks, in the sense of “parents”, “family”,”those present”, is colloquial and too folksy for formal writing.

TRIVIA

"Dreamt" is the only English word that ends with "mt". Reading trivial posts about English can give you more knowledge about English. You can discover many things that you don’t know. Try browsing the internet and look for some trivias. I assure you that it’s fun.

Pronunciation of Words

While I was listening to the homily of the priest yesterday, I realized that pronunciation of words is important. The meaning of the word depends upon how we deliver it. For example, the word as and us; sin and seen; to and two, have different meanings but they are pronounced similarly. Usually, people who pronounce words in the proper manner are being misjudged as trying hard or meticulous.

SOUND TRIP

I was listening to Taylor Swift's song, "Forever and Always", when this line from the song caught my attention.
"You still HASN'T called."
That sentence is grammatically wrong. Instead of HASN'T, HAVEN'T should be used.Writers should check the grammar of their song, and not only focus on how to make it sound good.

Friendly fire is not friendly.

Last Thursday, while browsing through Inquirer.net, I stumbled upon a compelling title: “Friendly fire may have killed some hostages.” I admit that I first thought of the genial type of friendly, but, it obviously made no sense. After doing a little research, I learned that it may also refer to accidental fratricide.

Bravo! I got to broaden my vocabulary. ((:/

Early Modern English

I remember when i was in high school. We were to recite a litany to the Holy Face of Jesus and one of the phrases said, "by the love where with thou didst..." Notice the words thou didst. These (words) belong to the stage in the English language known as the Early Modern English. If we compare it to the Modern English, we will see changes in grammar, in the meanings of some words, and in spelling. Today, some writers still prefer Early Modern English for "artistic" purposes.

SONG-A-LONGS

In listening to a song, one must observe the English usage of the piece to know if it’s grammatical. For example, I never felt nothing in the world like this before--a line from the song "Wait for you" by Elliot Yamin--uses double negative. See? Listen carefully to other songs and think if you'll still listen to errorific songs.

exam :(

I got the result on my English exam last Thursday, and still I did not pass it. I think English is my worst subject. Because since I’m in grade school it was my lowest grade among my other subject. Next time, I'll promise to pay attention in my English class and listen attentively to Ma'am Alfelor. I don’t want to repeat English 1.

The difference between “I love you” and “I’m in love with you.”

“I love you” and “I’m in love with you” are two sentences that have different meanings. A person can say, “I love you” , to whomever he or she loves, but he or she cannot just say, “I’m in love with you” , to another person if the person whom he or she loves doesn’t love him or her, too.

Y'all

How y'all doing? "Y'all" stands for "you all" and is properly a plural form. This is commonly believed to have originated in the Southern United States. Some people treat it as a singular form and use "all y'all" as its plural form. This plural second-person pronoun would not be appropriate for formal settings.

ENGLISH is a MUST

Nowadays, we often hear people say that English is a MUST in one’s life, and yes, I agree with that saying. Living a life without English is like going into a war without your weapons. We can use English in communicating, writing, even in finding a good job and many other ways. Thus, I can say that English is a MUST in one’s life. J

Describing for Effective Communication

In describing, one reports through words. People describe to make others experiences what they had experienced. Describing which is enlivened by the senses helps in giving a complete picture, in an imaginative way. Having a complete picture results from skills in describing and these should be used for they are paramount to communicate effectively.

SIGN LANGUAGE

My former classmate once asked this question, "Can we consider sign language as a language?" Many people would say no, but the truth is it is considered as one. Just like any language, sign language is a means of conveying or communicating ideas; although, it is expressed by visible hand gestures. It is a language developed for the mute and deaf people.

Misspelled Words

The advent of text messaging is one of the reasons why people misspell words nowadays. The commonly misspelled words are "a lot", "all right" and "separate". A lot is mistakenly written as "alot"; all right is mistakenly written as "alright"; separate is mistakenly written as "seperate". People should be wary of their correct spelling.

The Essence of Writing

Writing really helps us enhance our skills. It is a way of determining our capacity in the usage of the English language. It is also a way of expressing our emotions, moods, and thoughts. I remember what Truman Capote has said, "The greatest pleasure of writing is not what it is about, but the inner music the words make.

??

Disinterested or Uninterested?
They are not the same. Disinterested means impartial or neutral; uninterested means bored or lacking interest.
Example: A good teacher should be disinterested but certainly not uninterested.

Farther or Further?
Farther refers to physical distances.
Example: Indiana is farther than I thought.
Further refers to quantity, time, or degree.
Example: They progressed further on their research.

Use of i.e. and e.g.

The Latin abbreviations "i.e." and "e.g." are frequently used in writing. "I.e." means that is, which in Latin is 'id est.' It specifies something or makes clear of something. "E.g." means for example, which in Latin expression is 'exempli gratia.' It is used similar to the expression "including" when intending not to include everything that is being tackled.

Salvage means rescue?

Did you know that salvage means “rescue”? Yes, it is. According to Wikipedia, salvage means rescue ,but it is referred as the slang word for summary execution in Philippine English. Salvage is also related to the Spanish-derived Tagalog slang “sinalbahe” that literally means “turned bad”. Isn’t it amazing? You can click this hyperlink http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine_English to know more about Philippine English.

i don't want to wait ( Paula Cole)

One of my favorite songs is "I Don't Want To Wait" by Paula Cole. After listening to the song several times, i found that it contains lyrics with wrong grammar. It is found on the first stanza.

"so open up your morning light, and say a little prayer for I"
I should be me.

Any One Vs. Anyone

Any one is not the same with anyone. Any one means any single person or thing out of a group of people or things, while anyone means any person.

Example:

1) I can recommend any one of the books on this site.

2) Did anyone see that UFO?

ATM machine

Redundancy of words may create confusion. For example, "That guy deposited his money in the ATM machine." WHEW! Isn't the meaning of the acronym ATM is Automated Teller Machine? If we combine the meaning of the acronym ATM and machine, then we will have Automated Teller Machine machine. This is weird.

X)

Interjections

I wonder how people’s conversations would be if interjections were not introduced. Possibly, conversations would be dreary and lifeless. Interjections are words that express strong emotions. Some of the commonly used interjections nowadays are “hmm”, “whew”, “ouch”, “shh”, “oops”, and “duh”. I am glad because through the interjections, I am able to express my emotions clearly.

our pronounced as "are"

Most people commonly pronounced our as "are" or the letter "R". Obviously, it is incorrect. The proper pronunciation of our is the same as hour. The words our and hour are called homophones. Homophones are words that have similar pronunciations but have different meanings. However, our and are are not homophones. They have different pronunciations and spellings.

Longest Word

Many of us know that the longest word in the English dictionary is "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious", but when I watched a video in youtube, I realized that i was wrong. “Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis” is the longest word in the English dictionary which means, a lung disease caused by inhalation of silica. Hope that I added something in your vocabulary.

:)

Writing to Length

Most written works, like our blog, have a word limit. This is for an individual to omit irrelevant ideas. Also, this is for one to have laconic writing skills. This will help too to make one think comprehensively on how he or she organizes his or her thoughts on the given topic. So, this means every word counts.

"Reading Without Reflecting is Like Eating Without Digesting" -Edmund Burke

We can't deny the fact that reading should be done with understanding. Comprehension is needed; therefore, we should absorb the things that we have learned so that we could apply them in our daily lives. It is also a one way solution to enhance ourselves and for us to be familiar with the English language.

Redundancies

Moral lesson, repeat once again, free gifts, foreign imports, advance warning, ATM machine, etc. These words contain redundancy errors. Redundancies are errors that express repetitious meanings. These redundant expressions make writing longer, not better. Moreover, the phrases just weigh down our writing with unnecessary words. Other examples are brief summary, absolutely essential and actual facts.

REDUNDANCY: A Major Major Mistake!

Redundancy is the mistake of using two words that have the same meaning in a sentence. A very good example is commonly heard inside the classroom, "Kindly repeat that again once more." It actually makes sense, but try to ponder the words "repeat", "again", and "once more". Funny, isn't it? Unless employed deliberately for emphasis, the repetition of words with the same meaning should be avoided.

If or Whether?

Use if for a conditional idea, whether for an alternative or possibility.
Let me know if you'll be coming means that I want to hear from you only if you're coming.
Let me know whether you'll be coming means that I want to hear from you about your plans one way or the other.
(Garner, The Oxford Dictionary of American Usage and Style)

Proximity and English

Proximity, which results to repeated exposure is a big factor why people become attracted with one another. It is also the same with English. If we will use the language frequently ( repeated exposure ),the greater is the possibility that we will like it and the more that we will learn from it.

A closer look at "Major Major"

The word 'major' has been the most popular, or should I say, infamous word circling the country for the past few days. What I am saying is not just about the word 'major'-- it is about the words 'major, major'.

According to some of our country's linguists, Ms. Venus Raj translated her answer from Tagalog to English (e.g bonggang-bongga, araw-araw).She assumed that the translation would be fine, considering most translations. Her answer in Tagalog, I assumed was this : "Walang major na major na problema". Therefore, her answer in English turned out to be this: "There is nothing major major, I mean problem..". The phrase 'I mean' signified Venus' realization that her answer proved to be grammatically wrong. :)

But that' okay. She just let the world know that her line "major major" sprung from her being Filipino.

NO PARKEng

I saw this signboard, 'NO PARKEng' last Friday. I had a quick glance on it and thought ‘Why that spelling?'. There’re many reasons why an artist would do that. It is possible that he doesn't know the spelling or it can be that he did it to emphasize some points. I'm just amazed that simple phrases can somehow be twisted.

"I" vs "me"

The use of “I” and “me” is one of the common errors in pronoun usage. I” is use as the subject of the sentence while “me” is use as the object of the sentence. When these pronouns are used with a noun, the noun should go first followed by the correct form of the pronoun, as if it stands alone.

The Difference Between TAKE and BRING

I used to think that the words TAKE  and BRING  have the same meaning, until I discovered that TAKE means "to carry an object to a more distant place from a nearer one", while BRING means" to carry an object to a nearer place from a more distant one."
Examples:
1. Bring that bag over here.
2.Take these cakes to Granny's house.

Alphabets, Poems and English

Just recently, I have read a quote that goes like this :
"Old friends are like alphabets, and new friends are poems ; one will need to entirely learn the alphabets to make wonderful poems.."

Touching, is it not? This quote also signifies the importance of how we must view English. We must know the basics -- the nouns, pronouns etc.-- in order to make exemplary works of literature. In a sense, therefore, we must fully understand English and its other branches to our full potential.

SMS

It is now common to receive a text message composed of fragmented sentences. Most “texters” cut sentences down to size and this may or may not be due to the 160-character limit of certain mobile phones. It is normal that fragmented sentences are preferred in text messaging, but are not favored in formal writing. In this case, we should not forget what a complete sentence looks like.

English-speaking Toddlers

I want to share with you my observation about the English-speaking toddlers. I think they are so cute while they are saying their own sentences. But still, when you listen very carefully, you will still find flaws and error in grammar. But, I still commend them because they start speaking in English at young age.

A Book is a Friend

I can relate to this quotation that says, "You know you've read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you have lost a friend". I actually felt this when I read the book of Gifted Hands narrating the story of Ben Carson that inspired me so much.

Misplaced modifier

A misplaced modifier is one of the common mistakes in English language. Misplaced modifier is simply a word or phrase describing something but not placed near enough the word it is supposed to modify. For example, "The girl entered the house with a red dress." This is incorrect, it must be, "The girl with a red dress entered the house."

parallelism and parallel lines

Let's see how parallel lines and parallelism are connected with each other.
Parallel lines are lines that never meet nor intersect. They are lines having the same slope. The same is also true with parallelism. Words or group of words must be in the same kind. They come in pair.

same slope= same kind of words

Emotions through English

Humans have different emotions that they feel in their everyday life. It depends on the situation or the mood whether it is good or bad. Expressing your emotions through songs is not a bad idea to forget your problems and relax for a while. Having the knowledge in English language can help you express your emotions through songs. It can help you in writing songs. And the song will depend on what you feel that day. English language is really helpful in our daily lives.

"dislike" and "unlike"

Yesterday, while browsing some posts in Facebook, I saw a comment which says “unlike”. A person reacted on that comment and said that it should be “dislike”. Because of my eagerness to know whether who was right, I looked up for the meanings of the words “unlike” and “dislike” in the dictionary and found out that both means “not like”.

Fancy Talk

If you want to make a good first impression on someone, than talk fancy by saying uncommon synonyms of words. For example, in a "yes or no" conversation, instead of saying "no", say "not by any means", and instead of saying yes, say "unquestionably". Its that easy. If you want to make other words sound fancy, look them up in a thesaurus, it helps a lot.

WHAT'S BENEATH IS SPECIAL

People speak words that don't mean what they mean (e.g. "you're my life...", meaning, that the person who spoke loves you truly that having life without you makes everything lifeless). We often use this speech (known as figurative speech) in expressing how we feel. I found that hearing this kind of speech is more heartwarming than literal words, especially when used properly.
Many people are confused on "How do you do?" and "How are you?". "How do you do?" is not actually a question, it is another way of saying "Hello". While "How are you?" is a question and the typical responses are "I'm fine, thank you.", "Fine, you?" and "Fine, thanks."

Rappers and Their Art

Rappers never fail to entertain their audience. Their songs express sensible thoughts. But there is that one drawback that they can't seem to fix. Their songs contain sentences that are grammatically wrong. In the song Bump3X, Omarion said, "girl you need to be in magazines 'coz YOU'S a ghetto queen." We know that it shouldn't be "YOU'S" but "YOU'RE", instead. Others do the same, too. They insert words that will fit in the rhyme of their songs eventhough they are not acceptable in standard english.

"Can I?" or "May I?"

Because of my confusion, I looked up the proper usage of”may” and "can". Both have different meanings. "Can" refers to ability when used as a verb while "may” has to do with permission and possibility. Now, when someone asks if he can talk to you and you don’t want to you can say he can but he may not.

Using Words in Ways

Grammar is a developing set of rules in using words in ways that we can all concur on. Not everyone has the ability to speak with proper grammar. But the ability to portray this will agree to the growing communication techniques of this world. Paying attention to the English language like in English classes is a springboard to efficiency.

A Book is a Friend

I can relate to this quotation that says, "You know you've read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you have lost a friend". I actually felt this when I read the book of Gifted Hands narrating the story of Ben Carson that inspired me so much.

The extinction of dinosaurs made me really sad.

I now share with you a link to a website I stumbled upon going through the posts displayed on my Tumblr dashboard:

Save the Words displays a medley of words not often used in everyday language. Instead of letting these poor fellows gather dust in the attic, why not use them to fascinate close-by foppotees?

Troika

While I was reading Al Neuharth’s book, Confession of an S.O.B., an unfamiliar word caught my attention. It was troika. I looked up its meaning at the dictionary and found out that it means a group of three people working together. Reading books really adds up to our vocabulary. Try it too. I don’t read books before, but now I do.

THE POWER OF A PEN

My post last time was about trying to speak in English. But, since some people are having a hard time in speaking in front of others they have an option, and that is WRITING. Here we can express more of our thoughts correctly because we can check it first before we let others see it.

It's Either Not Both

Whenever I see the street sign, "no parking on both sides," I scratch my head and think hard. I really don't get it. Is it possible to park a car on both sides of the street? It's very illogical. Then during one of our comm 3 sessions our professor mentioned that the "no parking on both sides" sign is actually grammatically incorrect. He said that it should be 'either' and not 'both'. After many years of wondering, now I know. Amazing.

"None" Goes with the Flow

When my sister asked me what the correct form of the verb is in the phrase, none of the scientists (experiment, experiments), I immediately answered, "Take the singular form of the verb because 'none' means nothing." She did not agree with my answer and so we asked a very good English teacher about it. My sister was right because according to the teacher's sources, the antecedent of the word 'none' should determine the form of the verb.

The Wonders of Etymology on Right and Left

Etymology(the study of words),along with English, makes language fascinating.

Take the words "left " and "right”. People can conclude that one is derogatory than the other. The word 'left' in many languages is associated with evil or the devil. However, the Greek "dexter" gives us the word "dextrous" (skilful) means "on the right". ‘Left' (from Old English lyft) means 'weak, worthless’. Among the Nyoro in Africa, for example, 'left' means 'hated', and in Japan it means 'crazy'.

Common words which we people speak nowadays also regard left a defamatory concept than its counterpart. Did you ever hear the words lefteous, or even upleft in conversations, perhaps?

The Notebook

When I was in high school, our English teacher used to require us vocabulary notebooks.
There, we would write three words a day, each with its pronunciation, meaning and example.
At the end of every quarter, she would give us a surprise quiz on whatever we wrote in our notebooks. Honestly, I've never liked it. Out of the hundred words I've written, I could only remember an approximate of 30 words.

WORD

One of the most important reminder on English grammar is the use of words. Some words might have the same pronunciation but contain different meanings. For example, the words censor and sensor, censor means preventing a thing from reaching a public, while sensor is a device which senses any change. One word can make a sentence non-sense.
I am sharing with you a joke that I have just read, which illustrated how the English language was abused to make you laugh.

Court Scene

Witness: Pagkatapos namin kinuha ang pera niya naghiwa-hiwalay na kami.

Interpreter: After we took his money, we sepa-separated.

In this joke, the translation was done literally. Though it sounded funny, it is still incorrect.

Tagalog to English

One of the questions in our first exam was to translate “Umalis na si Jo” in English. The right answer was "Jo had left." because the action is done in the past perfect tense due to the existence of the word "na". After that, I realized that it is not easy to translate Tagalog to English and vice versa.

The Importance of Feedback in Communication

Last night while i was surfing the internet, i saw a quotation that goes like this, "Don't forget that feedback is one of the essential elements of good communication". We all know that communication is one of the applications of the English language. The insights of other people will help us to know our mistakes and how we can improve those errors.

The Universal Language

Being proficient in English language can help you in many ways. As a student, knowing the language will be a BIG help for you in doing English-related tasks in different subjects that you take. And as a professional, it can help you in dealing with your foreign clients that use English. As a conclusion, English language is now a necessity for one to be successful in his or her life.
